Development Application

What is a Development Application?

A Development Application (DA) is the process of obtaining approval from your local council for various development activities, including building work.

When Do I Need a Development Application?

A DA is typically required for both residential and commercial premises in several situations. For instance, if you’re starting a new business or building a new home, you’ll likely need to submit a DA. Similarly, a DA may be necessary if you're planning to alter the operations of an existing business or make substantial changes to an existing property.

It’s important to check if any prior approvals have been granted for the site and what the premises are currently approved for, as any new development or alterations may depend on these existing approvals. In some cases, a DA may also be required to secure other permits, such as specific industry licences.

When Don’t I Need a Development Application?

For low-impact or minor changes, you might be eligible for a Complying Development Certificate (CDC), which offers a quicker approval process. Complying development must meet specific standards and conditions, such as adding an awning or a shade structure to a business or residential property.

Complying development can be assessed by the local council or a private accredited certifier without the need for a full DA.

Since each project is unique, it's essential to check with your local council regarding the specific requirements for your development plans.

What is the Development Application Process?

The process of preparing and submitting a DA can vary in complexity and time. You’ll need to lodge the DA with your local council in the area where your property is located or planned.
